Grasp of Avarice dungeon guide
Grasp of Avarice came out on December 7, 2021, with the Bungie 30th Anniversary Pack, which you need to play it. It’s a pirate-flavoured love letter to the Destiny 1 Loot Cave, set in the Cosmodrome, with Hive and Fallen fighting over a pile of cursed treasure. Up to three players can run it, on normal or Master difficulty.
Core mechanics
- Enemies drop cursed engrams that give you Burdened by Riches. It has a 30-second timer, and you die if it runs out, so deposit your stacks at the crystal in time. Ten stacks also refill your Super.
- A Vandal drops the Scorch Cannon, which you use to open doors, trigger generators and launch things around.
1. The Loot Cave
Exactly what you’d hope: kill the Hive streaming out of the cave, grab the engrams and feed them to the crystal until it’s satisfied.
2. The Rusted Gangplank
A trap course full of levers, pressure plates, doors and spikes that kill instantly. Watch the patterns before you move.
3. Phry’zhia, the Insatiable
Grab the Scorch Cannon from its Vandal and shoot generators to open doors and bring in more enemies. Their engrams go into the crystal, and once it’s full, Phry’zhia succumbs to temptation and you can damage the Ogre.
4. The Sparrow run
Race through the area on Sparrows and defuse the mines before their timer runs out. Driving over the buttons along the way adds time.
5. Fallen Shield
Kill the Servitors and launch their shells into the central structure with the cannons. Four are needed to bring the shield down.
6. Captain Avarokk, the Covetous
The final boss brings friends, R-M80 and Grisprax among them. Shoot generators with the Scorch Cannon to release engrams, deposit them, and when Avarokk gives in to temptation, unload. Repeat until the Captain goes down.
Gjallarhorn
Gjallarhorn doesn’t drop here at random. It comes from Xur’s quest And Out Fly the Wolves, which includes clearing Grasp of Avarice, a visit to Banshee-44 and the Exodus Garden 2A Lost Sector, then assembling the rocket at the workbench near Shaw Han. Its catalyst comes from the dungeon’s secret chests. The full loot table is below.
