Two copies of the same Legendary weapon in Destiny 2 can feel like completely different guns. That comes down to the roll: the specific mix of parts and perks a weapon has when it drops. Once you know how rolls are put together, you can tell in a few seconds whether a new drop is worth keeping or should go straight to dismantle.
This guide covers how perk columns work, the difference between random and fixed rolls, what enhanced perks and masterworks add, how the gear tier system from The Edge of Fate changed things, and how to check any roll against our database.
The anatomy of a weapon roll
Open the inspect screen on any Legendary weapon and you will see a row of sockets. Each socket holds one option, and together they make up the roll. The exact labels change by weapon type (a bow has a bowstring and arrow instead of a barrel and magazine, a sword has a blade and guard), but the structure follows the same pattern.
| Socket | What it does |
|---|---|
| Intrinsic (frame) | Defines the weapon’s archetype, such as its rate of fire and general handling. It never changes between rolls. |
| Barrel (or sight, blade, bowstring) | Mostly stat adjustments, for example more range or more stability. |
| Magazine (or battery, arrow, guard) | Stat changes plus effects such as faster projectiles or a bigger magazine. |
| Trait column 1 | The first main perk, often something that helps with reloading, handling or ability energy. |
| Trait column 2 | The second main perk, frequently a damage or kill-related effect. |
| Origin trait | A bonus perk tied to where the weapon comes from, such as a specific activity or vendor. |
| Masterwork and mod | A stat bonus you upgrade over time, plus a slot for a weapon mod. |
The two trait columns matter most. They hold the perks that change how a gun plays, and the combination of those two is what players argue about. Barrels and magazines fine-tune the weapon, and the origin trait is a small extra on top.
Frames and archetypes
The intrinsic frame tells you what kind of weapon you are holding before you look at any perks. Hand cannons, for instance, come in several frames with different rates of fire, and each frame has its own damage per shot and falloff. Bungie tunes frames as a group, so a balance change to one frame affects every weapon that uses it. The Edge of Fate also added new frames, such as spread-shot hand cannons and rocket-assisted pulse rifles.
Because the frame is fixed, compare weapons within the same archetype. A strong perk pair on a frame you do not enjoy will still feel wrong in your hands. Our weapons database has a Weapon Frame filter, which makes it easy to list every gun that shares an archetype.
Random rolls and fixed rolls
Most Legendary weapons have random rolls. Every time one drops, the game picks one option per socket from that weapon’s perk pool. Destiny 2 launched with static rolls, and random rolls came back with the Forsaken expansion in 2018. That change is why farming the same weapon repeatedly makes sense: each copy can be different.
Exotic weapons work differently. They are built around a signature intrinsic perk and usually come with a set roll, so you are not hunting for a better copy. Many can be improved with an Exotic catalyst instead, which adds stats, an extra perk, or both once you unlock it.
Origin traits
Origin traits are tied to a weapon’s source rather than its type. Weapons from the same activity or vendor tend to share the same origin trait options, which gives a set of guns a common identity. They are rarely the reason a roll is good or bad, but some are strong enough to tip a close call.
Enhanced perks and masterworks
An enhanced perk is an upgraded version of a normal perk. It does the same job, just a little better, so it is a nice bonus rather than something that turns a weak perk into a strong one. Enhanced perks used to be limited to crafted weapons and some raid guns. The Final Shape opened enhancement up to more weapons, and The Edge of Fate replaced that system with gear tiers, covered below.
A masterwork is an upgrade you apply yourself. On a Legendary weapon it adds +10 to one stat once it is fully upgraded, and a masterworked weapon can generate Orbs of Power on multikills and track your kills. Under the tier system, a fully masterworked high-tier weapon also gets an extra stat bonus on top of the normal masterwork stat.
Gear tiers after The Edge of Fate
The Edge of Fate launched on July 15, 2025 and introduced weapon tiers from 1 to 5. Harder content drops higher-tier gear, and each tier adds more to the roll.
| Tier | What it adds |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | The base weapon, one option per perk column. |
| Tier 2 | Enhanced versions of the two trait perks. |
| Tier 3 | Drops with two trait options per column, so you can switch between them. |
| Tier 4 | Enhanced barrel and magazine options. |
| Tier 5 | Three trait options per column, an enhanced origin trait, and unique Tier 5 cosmetics. |
Higher tiers are clearly better, but the perks still decide most of a weapon’s value. A Tier 1 copy with the perks you want will outperform a Tier 5 copy with perks you do not want. A Tier 5 with the right perks is the best version you can own, and the extra perk options per column make it much more likely that a high-tier drop contains a combination you like. Since the Monument of Triumph update in June 2026 you can also upgrade a weapon’s tier, which our gear tiers guide explains.
What happened to crafting?
Weapon crafting arrived with The Witch Queen in 2022. You unlocked a pattern by extracting red-border (Deepsight) copies of a weapon, then built the exact roll you wanted and could reshape it later. Bungie started moving away from it in Episode: Revenant, where new seasonal weapons stopped being craftable and the focus shifted back to chasing drops. The gear tier system now does the job of rewarding players with stronger copies of a weapon, so for new loot the path forward is earning higher tiers rather than unlocking patterns.
What a “god roll” means
A god roll is the best possible perk combination for a given weapon. There is rarely a single answer, though. The ideal roll for raids is often different from the ideal roll for the Crucible, where handling, range and recoil matter more. Most players keep a PvE target and a PvP target for the same gun.
A practical way to judge a drop:
- Start with the two trait columns. If neither perk is useful for what you play, the rest of the roll hardly matters.
- Check that the two traits work together, such as one perk that keeps you shooting and one that rewards you for doing so.
- Look at the barrel and magazine next. They can push a stat past an important breakpoint, like range on a hand cannon.
- Treat the origin trait and masterwork as tiebreakers.
- Factor in tier last. A higher tier makes a good roll better, but it does not rescue a bad one.
How to check rolls on Lightbearer Saga
Every weapon in our weapons database has its own page listing every perk it can roll, sorted by socket, along with its base stats and where it drops. You can filter the list by weapon type, element, slot, ammo type, rarity, frame and anti-champion property.
The weapon perks database works in the other direction. Filter by perk type, for example Trait, Barrel, Magazine or Origin Trait, then open a perk to read what it does and see every weapon that can roll it. That is the fastest way to find which guns can get a perk you already like.
- Got a new drop? Open its weapon page and compare your perks with the full pool for each column.
- Hunting a specific perk? Search the perk page and pick the weapon whose frame and source suit you.
- Finishing the build? Browse weapon and armor mods, or put the whole loadout together in the build planner.
Perk pools and tier rules can change with balance updates, so if something in the game does not match what you expect, the in-game inspect screen is always the final word.
